It was on Thursday, February 23, 1905, that Paul Harris met with three of his friends in Chicago,Illinois. Mr. Harris was an attorney; Gus Loehr, a mining engineer; Hiram Shorey, a tailor, and Sylvester Schiele, a coal dealer. They met for the purpose of getting better acquainted and to learn more about each other's business. The second meeting was in Paul's law office and the following meetings rotated among each person's place of business. Thus became The Rotary Club. Soon the membership grew such that it became necessary to meet in hotels, restaurants and similar establishments. A second club was formed in San Francisco in 1908; then another in Oakland (CA), another in Seattle (WA), followed by one in Los Angeles (CA). At the time of the first Rotary Convention in 1910, there were sixteen clubs. Paul Harris became President of the National Association of Rotary Clubs. In that same year, when a club was chartered in Winnepeg, Canada, it became the International Association of Rotary Clubs and in 1922 became Rotary International. As of this writing, there are more than one million Rotarians in twenty-six thousand clubs world-wide. Rotary continues to be a world fellowship of business and professional executives who accept the ideal of service as the basis for success and happiness in business and professional life.
The Rich-Mar Rotary Club is a civic organization whose members are dedicated to the ideal of service through their personal, business and community lives. The purposes of rotary are to offer service in the avenues of community, vocational, club and international. Rich-Mar Rotary Club is one of more than 28,000 clubs that are part of Rotary International. Rotary clubs are located in 156 countries and 35 geographical regions of the world. In 1968, a group of local business and professional men from Richland Township and the Mars area saw the need for a men's service club in the community. These men, and representatives of the Butler Rotary Club, met regularly for almost one year while plans were being made for the organizing of the Rich-Mar Club. The club was chartered in the spring of 1969 with twenty-five members. Today the club has a membership of approximately sixty-five business and professional men and women who represent many of the businesses and industries in the community.
