RICH-MAR ROTARY PROJECTS

Rich-Mar Rotarians meet weekly at Treesdale Golf and Country Club over lunch to share ideas and plan ways in which the club can foster and encourage the ideals of "service above self" in the community. Rich-Mar hosts speakers and guests at these weekly luncheon meetings to broaden its knowledge of the needs and concerns of the community and world. Rich-Mar is active in the local Rotary District (District 7280), supporting programs that have local, national and international focus.  Some of those programs are listed here:

bulletAnnual Golf Outing

Held in June each year - the annual golf outing at Treesdale Golf & Country Club encourages camaraderie and goodwill among Rotarians and raises funds for area charities.

bulletDictionaries for Schools Program

Rich-Mar provides personalized dictionaries for all 3rd graders within both Pine Richland and Mars Area schools. Each year Rotarians gather together during a social event to label the dictionaries and then deliver them to each school classroom.

bulletPicnic for PARC

Each year in September, Rich-Mar hosts a picnic in Butler for PARC (Pennsylvania Association of Retarded Citizens), a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to exercise their independence, enjoy an enhanced quality of life and experience life to the fullest.  This past year over 200 citizens were served grilled hotdogs, fresh corn on the cob and cookies; then enjoyed a game of Bingo together for prizes.

bulletRotary Pancake Breakfast

Rich-Mar Rotary sponsors an annual Pancake Breakfast at Mars United Presbyterian Church in November.  Proceeds are used to support local service programs like the ones listed here.

Members of Rich-Mar Rotary work together, along with local Interact students from Pine Richland and Mars High Schools who volunteer to serve patrons and to make this pancake breakfast an out-of-this-world Mars experience.

Rotarians show up before dawn to begin the baking process.  All the  baked goods are made fresh and served with buckwheat or buttermilk pancakes, three types of sausage from Thoma Meats -  sweet and smoked links and fresh ground patties.  Each year over 500 community residents are served breakfast on this day.

bulletTurkey Trot Race  Rich-Mar partners with Treesdale Golf and Country Club to sponsor a 5K run and 1 mile walk to benefit local non-profit agencies on the Saturday following Thanksgiving.

bulletRotary Student of the Month Program

A student from both Mars Area and Pine-Richland High Schools are chosen as "Student of the Month"  during the school year and honored at the Rich-Mar Club meeting quarterly for their achievements.

bulletRotary Youth Leadership Award        Link to RYLA

Each year three Junior level students are chosen from Pine Richland and Mars High Schools by a Committee of  Rich-Mar Rotarians for their leadership potential and community service record to represent the club.  They join with others from Western Pennsylvania in June for week long program of leadership training at Westminster College through the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) program. Find out more by clicking the link above.

bullet Interact                  Link to Interact Clubs

Pine Richland and Mars Area High Schools have Interact Clubs sponsored by Rich-Mar Rotary, but are self-supporting and self-governing.  These clubs exist to develop leadership skills, promote personal integrity and foster international understanding and goodwill.

Pictured here are members of the Pine Richland Interact Club reporting on their activities during a regular Rich-Mar luncheon meeting that was held at Pine Richland's newest school, Eden Hall.

ROTARY DISTRICT 7280 PROJECTS

Rich-Mar Rotary participates in many district programs including

bulletScotland Golf Exchange

Each year Rich-Mar Rotary participates in a Golf Exchange Program hosted by Rotary District 7280 with Rotary Clubs in Scotland.  The groups from both countries alternate hosting Rotarians for two weeks of golf and camaraderie.  In 2008 we traveled to Scotland and in 2009 the Scots are coming to Western PA.

bulletKatrina Relief Trip  For three years in a row Rich-Mar Rotarians have traveled to the site where Hurricane Katrina devastated Mississippi to help in a rebuilding mission bringing volunteers and materials together to help residents get back to normal.

bulletLighthouse Building Project

Rich-Mar Rotarians assisted The Lighthouse of Butler County in refurbishing apartments in downtown Butler for   low-income residents.  Pictured here is President Mark Vincent, head electrician installing new light fixtures.

INTERNATIONAL ROTARY PROJECTS

Rich-Mar also promotes international understanding and goodwill by working towards the goals of Rotary International and its non-profit organization Rotary Foundation.  Some of their programs include:

bulletThe Global Eradication of Polio

All Rotarians worldwide are united in a campaign for the global eradication of polio. In the 1980s, Rotarians raised US$240 million to immunize the children of the world; by 2010, the PolioPlus program will have contributed US$850 million to this cause. In addition, Rotary has provided an army of volunteers to promote and assist at national immunization days in polio-endemic countries around the world.  Check out more with Rotary Polio Project.

bulletHeifer Project

Rich-Mar Rotarians contribute annually to support this worthwhile program. Since 1944, Heifer International has worked to bring help, healing and hope to millions of impoverished families worldwide.  In its first 60 years, Heifer assisted more than 10 million families.  In areas where hunger and despair once prevailed, Heifer programs have reinvigorated communities through livestock, training, and "passing on the gift."  To learn more, check out Heifer International.

bullet Computer Labs for Schools in Rwanda

Thanks to  Rotary Foundation support, students in parts of Rwanda can now enjoy being connected to the world through the internet.

This is one way Rotary reaches out to level the playing field around the world, encouraging improved education, self-development and international goodwill.

bullet Clean Water Projects

Rotary Foundation supports water projects in African nations, providing clean water for drinking, proper sanitation and growing crops.

In addition, Rich-Mar Club has supported clean water filtration programs in Honduras and the Dominican Republic by sending funds and volunteers to the areas.
